CELTIC PROCESSION

Jacques PELLEN
Of connections to processions

What allow the CELTIC PROCESSION to be born ?
Jacques PELLEN :
It can go back to several times. At the beginning of the Eighties, for example, there was a trio around Kristen Nogues as composer and leader. In this trio, there were a former member of KOLINDA, Ivan Lantos, and a Hungarian drummer of the name of Peter GRITZ. I turned around like a satellite. One day, Ivan Lantos was replaced by an electric bass player with whom I played and there were rounds in Belgium during which it sometimes happened to me to take part in this group. At this time, there was already an orchestra which resembles to CELTIC PROCESSION. (Of the remainder, at the time of the concerts given to "La Maroquinerie", in Paris, in March 2000, one played of the compositions which goes back to this time.)
Thereafter, the group of Kristen changed seasons progressively. It was the time of the great experiments with musicians who have imposing names, like Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Cesario Salvim, Denis Barber, who led us to still know other people. Peter GRITZ brought for example the Italian double bass player Riccardo Del Fra, then later (in 1994) the sardish trumpet player Paolo Fresu.
With Riccardo and Kristen, we formed a group which bore my name as " leader": JACQUES PELLEN CELTIC CONNECTION; it was in 1987, therefore 13 years ago. I remember a concert to the Festival interceltic of Lorient in 1988: there were Riccardo, Peter, Kristen, an English trumpet player of the name of Henri Lawzer (to replace the English-Canadian trumpet player, Kenny Wheeler), and me.
In fact, the group of Kristen became my group. It is not a catch of being, but I had begun my research in this way, which I always explore, as of the middle of the Eighties.

Preparation and Evolution

The disc which be published at the beginning of the Nineties with Riccardo Del Fra, Peter Gritz, etc, can thus be regarded as a springboard towards the CELTIC PROCESSION ?
JP :
Yes, it was recorded in 1988 and failed to be called like that. I thus learned that one does not do what one wants when the stay in a studio is counted to you! I wanted to make a succession of pieces, environments, which I wanted to call "Celtic Procession". This continuation exists partially on the disc. Each one have to play a Celtic topic of origin. Finally, that was pinned in another manner.
I hear again this disc little time ago, and I found that it was my best disc. Peter GRITZ had connected me on Kenny Wheeler, whereas I intended to take Eric Le Lann (he is Breton). However, Kenny Wheeler had just recorded with Keith Jarrett, therefore that appeared a little insane to me! I wrote to him, and he answered me positively. Thus he stands on the first disc of CELTIC PROCESSION and we made several concerts with him. Thereafter, Kenny Wheeler was to some extent replaced by Paolo Fresu in the world of the CELTIC PROCESSION. He plays of the same instrument, but not at the same way. Paolo was as of his arrival interested by the Breton matter, from where the trio with Erik Marchand.

With the first disc of the CELTIC PROCESSION, it is not already any more one four-bit byte which occurs. There is more people above. How did this arrive ?
JP :
Eric Barret had come to play in Brittany, in particular with Didier Squiban, Bruno Névez (a guitarist of Brest), and it is quite naturally that I asked him to replace Kenny Wheeler when this one was not available. In the same way, I asked Gildas Boclé to replace Riccardo Del Fra when this last could not come. I found myself with a four-bit byte which put to me in a rather unstable position.
We were a group of professionals, young wolves playing like the insane ones! They was a little like being found in the group of the Turn of France with a VTT! (laughter) Then in fact, on the disc, we find the first four-bit byte with Kenny Wheeler, Riccardo Del Fra and Peter GRITZ, v Celtic Procession : brothers Molard.

Antoine Hervé:
I was beginner the first time that I have intended to play (a concert at Dunois in 83 with his big band). Not only I was liquified by the orchestra and writing style, but i was very impressed by his play with the piano. The impression was amplified when I have listened him in trio with Michel Benita et Peter Gritz.

Francis Lockwood - Jimi's Colors

HIGH NOTES

Francis Lockwood: Jimi's Colors

By MICHAEL PRONKO

Re-thinking Jimi Hendrix in terms of an acoustic jazz piano trio would seem to be a bit of a stretch. It comes as a surprise, then, that Francis Lockwood's new release, "Jimi's Colors" -- which does just that -- works so well. On listening, however, unexpected similarities reveal themselves.

Hendrix worked primarily in a trio format, interacting intensely with his bass and drum players. Even on his most stoned-out live recordings, the rhythms never rest for long in the simple 4/4 of rock, but push for more. Much as jazz pianists do, Hendrix also created a lush harmonic backing to his own lead lines. He wrote beautiful compositions that moved between explosive anger and delicate sensitivity.

Lockwood, his French bassist Gilles Naturel and drummer Peter Gritz capture those elements of Hendrix's music and turn them into engaging jazz that remains true to the emotional subtleties of Hendrix's work. "Gipsy Eyes" maintains its high-throttled pace and "The Wind Cries Mary" its mournful beauty.

From the fast, bouncing beat of the opening tune, "Third Stone From the Sun," Lockwood's trio shows a respect also for the artistry of Hendrix. They handle the melody lines like precious jewels, but don't shy away from pounding, forceful beats either. On "All Along the Watchtower," Lockwood adds harmonies without detracting from the hip, cynical intention of the Bob Dylan tune that Hendrix electrified. The cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" sticks with the coiling, psychedelic riffs, but follows them further improvisationally.

Lockwood also adds three of his own compositions, which, if you didn't check the credits, might be confused for less-well-known Hendrix songs. These three show the degree to which Lockwood has internalized the feeling and style of Hendrix. For a French pianist better known in Europe than elsewhere, this CD marks an excellent debut on the global jazz scene.

Jimis Colors     Francis Lockwood

Autor: Christian Bakonyi     Quelle: Jazzzeit
Genre: Jazz     Produkttyp : CD

Pianist Francis Lockwood, Bassist Gilles Naturel und Peter Gritz, Schlagzeug, hatten eine Idee: Wir sind Jazz Musiker und ein gutes Piano Trio und wir hören gerne Hendrix. Warum arrangieren wir nicht "Third stone from the sun", "All along the watchtower", "The wind cries Mary", "Hey Joe" und "Little wing" für unser Trio? Gesagt-getan.

What would give :

Author: Christian Bakonyi     source: Jazzzeit
category: Jazz     type of product : CD

Pianist Francis Lockwood, bassist Gilles Naturel and Peter Gritz, drums, had an idea: We are jazz musician and a good piano Trio and we hear gladly Hendrix. Why don't we arrange "Third stone from the sun", "All along the watchtower", "The wind cries Mary", "Hey Joe" and "Little wing" for our Trio? Say-done.
Now Jimi Hendrix is present for highly sensitive souls. That sounds spitful, is not however meant so at all. It fascinated and shocked in equal parts, as one can deal with the music of the guitar God.
Naturally all versions of Francis Lockwood cannot withstand the maximum level, but we must admit, some tracks sound as if they would have been written for a piano jazz Trio. Who does not dare, which does not win.
With "Jimi's Colors" it goes into the extension or in the penalty shootout. Which wins, the shock or the fascination - decide.
